So I moved away from Squarespace simply because I don’t want to pay over NZ$350 for the annual hosting fee. That’s a ridiculous amount to pay for stupid musings and a whole bunch of nice photos. People have said the same thing about some of my shoes, but that’s different. I get a more fully-rounded sense of satisfaction knowing I’m well shod, whereas, a photo of a nice plate of food is what really??
And there’s the timing as well. Heaps of expenses in August! Gifts for a whole bunch of people. A new dishwasher (after having washed stuff by hand for nearly a year) etc, etc. So the idea of forking out some more for, well, musings and pretty photos, just drove me over the edge.
I considered stopping blogging altogether but it’s just one of those things that I’ve been doing for so long, that it feels even weirder to stop. I don’t want to have to face and process what comes after that because I have to admit that it’s more than just musings and photos isn’t it? (don’t want to face and process that too- I don’t have the time or the energy!).
But if I had known how utterly and unnecessarily complicated WordPress would be, I would have probably stayed. It took two people and an AI to get things going and even then, I only managed to finally land on this template last night by accident.
All the posts and images from Squarespace- ten years worth, imagine that– are stored somewhere on our home server and as an XML file on an initial (failed) attempt to create a continuity that became a nightmare to sort.
I think at this point, I’ve written so many times how I don’t really look back at the past, so the past stays where it has always stayed and we just carry on I suppose as we all should.
PS: turns out I was on an old Squarespace legacy payment plan. I could have moved into a cheaper plan, but still over NZ$100 more than what I’ve paid for WordPress. Oh well.
