What’s one piece of travel advice you always follow?

I’ll do another post about this, but the number of times that we had been misinformed, outrightly misled or totally lied to by people posting on social-media is diabolical. There’s no such thing as the ‘truth’ anymore, not when you feel that facts are neither attractive nor conveniently short enough to fit under 30 seconds. So you just leave things out, cherry-pick and reconstruct things around your own narrative.
This is what traveling has become in this generation.
If you truly want to learn something that, to take home something back with you that is more tangible than an Instagram reel or a shopping haul from an outlet, then throw out everything you know and expect about traveling from the lens of social-media and from other people.
- Learn the basics of transport, of how and where you can go from where you’re staying to the places you want to go.
- Familiarise yourself with the public safety aspect of that country which determines where you can go and and what you can bring on your person every day when you’re out and about (fuck Europe with all its pickpockets and thieves).
- Put yourself in the mindset of, ‘what if i live here?’ What would be my daily routine be? This is one quick way of learning about how the locals really live.
- Be honest of what you truly expect out of the trip- are you there just for the social-media posts? It’s fine if you are, but that’s so DUMB.
